Zogby Poll Finds Summer Magic: Two-thirds of ‘Potter’ Adult Fans Set to Buy New Book; Three-in-Ten Adults Read J.K. Rowling’s Books; Most See Themselves in Ravenclaw House; Say Bush, Hillary ‘Slytherin’ Alums
With Saturday’s release of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince set for midnight, a new Zogby Interactive poll indicates that U.S. publisher Scholastic is set to sell books at a brisk pace, with two-thirds (66%) of the three-in-ten (29%) adults who’ve read past “Potter” books saying they plan to read the sixth installment.
The survey also found that most Americans would place themselves in Ravenclaw, one of the four mythical houses at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry—but would place both President Bush and New York Senator Hillary Clinton in Slytherin, home to such treacherous characters as Harry Potter’s arch-rival, Draco Malfoy.
The Zogby Interactive survey of 6,819 adults nationwide was conducted May 19 through 26, 2005, and has a margin of error of +/-1.2 percentage points.
The poll, which identified adults who had read any of the previous five books in J.K. Rowling’s series about the adventures of the boy wizard studying at Hogwarts, found that at least three-in-five past adult readers of the books in every geographic region of the country plan to read Half-Blood Prince. One of the most fascinating aspects of the poll was that factors that often impact response, such as party registration, had no impact at all on the question—while 65% of Democrats and independents plan to read the book, so do 66% of Republicans. The new book will likely perform particularly well with adults under 50, as 72% of all Harry Potter fans between the ages of 18 and 49 plan to read it.
See Selves in Ravenclaw; Bush, Clinton in Slytherin; Mrs. Bush in Huffelpuff
One of the survey’s more interesting findings is that, despite the fact the main character resides in Gryffindor, the house that respondents were reminded values loyalty and courage, most adults saw themselves in Ravenclaw (41%), where intelligence and wit are the attributes most valued. Gryffindor was second, at 30%, followed by Huffelpuff, where loyalty, patience and hard work are valued, at 23%. Slytherin, where cunning and ambition are considered the ultimate virtues, was the house where just 2% of respondents saw themselves.
However, the same respondents who could not see themselves in Slytherin could picture two prominent citizens there: 52% placed George W. Bush in Draco Malfoy’s digs, while 50% of respondents placed New York’s junior senator, Hillary Rodham Clinton, there with him. The responses unsurprisingly were driven by respondents’ partisan affiliation. Meanwhile, First Lady Laura Bush, according to a 45% plurality of survey participants, would be a good fit for Huffelpuff.
Would Elect Hermione Granger President over Harry, Ron
Pint-sized witch Hermione Granger would easily be elected President over both Harry Potter and pal Ron Weasley. The poll finds that 57% of the books’ fans would elect her president, while just one-in-four (25%) would choose the books’ hero. His somewhat awkward and clumsy friend, Ron, fared worst, however: just 5% would vote for the young redheaded wizard.
Zogby International conducted interviews of 6,819 American adults nationwide, including 2,002 self-described readers of “Harry Potter” books. All surveys were conducted from servers housed at Zogby International headquarters in Utica, N.Y., from May 19 through 26, 2005. The margin of error is +/-1.2 percentage points. Margins of error are higher in subgroups.
